In the words of our great mascot, Howard, “User experience abhors a vacuum.” Since user research involves an exploration of complex systems of interactions, we think the way we visually map these interactions should be more than a bulleted Word list. Affinity diagramming is an effective way to visualize hidden trends and connections between the different parts of a given user experience system, and they make it easier to glean insights that might otherwise remain out of sight (literally). Plus, affinity diagrams just look cool.
